2022

Alastair Gibson launches his Retro Baby Piranha series paying homage to motorsports history.

A smaller version of the original Racing Piranha sculpture commissioned by Rubens Barrichello in 2007, the expanding sculpture series features liveries evoking races such as the 1976 World Championship win by James Hunt and the 1971 Le Mans 24-hour race.
2020-2021

Alastair Gibson creates Baby Piranha and M Manta sculptures in aid of the NHS.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, 25% of all sales of the limited-edition sculptures, which feature the NHS rainbow, go to the Brackley Community Hospital near Gibson’s studio. He later donates one sculpture from each series to be displayed permanently at the hospital.
2019

Alastair Gibson creates a 3.5m Carbon Humboldt sculpture in yellow and gold for the superyacht Scout.

Gibson’s sculpture is an ode to the colour scheme of the impressive 63.7m ocean vessel, which in the top 5% by length of yachts in the world and was created by the historic Hakvoort Shipyard in the Netherlands.
2018

Alastair Gibson creates a bespoke J Mako shark for The Shark Trust which is sold at auction.

Using The Shark Trust’s colours, the auction of the sculpture in Plymouth raises £50K for the UK charity. Gibson also makes mako shark keyrings incorporating The Shark Trust’s logo as gifts for those involved in the event.

2012-2016

Alastair Gibson creates further limited-edition and one-off solid carbon fibre artworks.

Carbon King, a lion’s skull, is created in 2012, followed by Carbon Bulldog (a commission for Dunhill) in 2013. The unique God Save The African Queen sculpture is unveiled in 2016. Gibson uses innovative methods to work within his medium for all the sculptures.

2011

Alastair Gibson creates Grapes From The Moon in support of Zip Zap Circus.

The Tintin rocket inspired sculpture, a wine display case, is commissioned to raise funds for the charity which inspires and empowers young people in South Africa through performing arts.

2010

Alastair Gibson creates his first sculpture in solid carbon fibre, pushing the capabilities of the material.

The limited-edition sculpture series We Are All Made Of Stars is a detailed study of a human skull and considers carbon as a building block of life while taking carbon fibre art to new levels.

2008-2023

Alastair Gibson exhibits his sculptures at major international art fairs and automotive events.

Gibson’s artworks are shown at events in London, Miami, Moscow, Monaco and beyond and he is represented by art galleries throughout the UK, developing a discerning following of collectors and enthusiasts.
2015

Alastair Gibson is instrumental in the launch of prestigious galleries.

Gibson’s artworks are displayed at the opening of the Maddox Gallery in Mayfair as well as the Christian Marx Gallery in Düsseldorf. He also exhibits at the 45 Park Lane hotel in London, returning in 2016 for a private exhibition unveiling his giant manta sculpture.

2008

Alastair Gibson retires from motorsports to become a full-time artist using carbon fibre as his medium.

Having already exhibited at the contemporary Hout Bay Gallery, Cape Town, Gibson establishes a studio in Brackley, Northamptonshire, near Silverstone, the home of British motor racing. He embellishes his sculptures with original parts from modern Grand Prix cars.
1986-2008

Alastair Gibson climbs the ranks of Formula One to become chief mechanic for BAR and Honda.

Gibson previously enjoys championship success with Jenson Button as lead mechanic for Benetton. Under intense pressure and scrutiny, he hones his problem-solving skills, develops a flair for ingenuity and becomes renowned for his creative technical solutions.
1986

Alastair Gibson moves to the UK to pursue his dream of a career in motorsports.

The relocation follows two years’ compulsory national service in the South African army and further studies in balance engineering after completing his education in Johannesburg.

1970s

Alastair Gibson develops a love of Formula One through racing mechanic father Alastair (Al).

At the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit near Johannesburg, where Al tested the original Porsche 550 Spyder, father and son regularly watch races together from the dramatic Jukskei Sweep witnessing the tragic death of Shadow team driver Peter Revson in 1974.
1960s/70s

Alastair Gibson develops an interest in wildlife on childhood holidays on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.

Discovering sharks discarded by fishermen on the beach, Gibson makes a study of their anatomy and produces his first sculptures of marine life, a theme he will return to as an established artist, noticing their aerodynamic shape.
1962

Alastair Gibson is born near Johannesburg, South Africa to parents Maria and Alastair.

Gibson attends King Edward VII school in Johannesburg which places emphasis on the rounded individual and developing personal qualities including leadership, laying the foundations for his philosophical outlook on life and later career successes.
